Nov 4, 2019
I officially joined the video game industry in June as a product manager and re-located across 3,000 miles (4,828 Km for any readers outside the US). It has been an exciting period, personally and professionally. However, between transplanting, parenting a toddler, and adapting to a new company/product/role, I hardly had time to write more articles.
As I decided to re-start writing, I thought it would make sense to look back at my current progress on my 2019 gaming resolutions.
High Level Objective | Task | Progress |
---|---|---|
Become a better project manager | Complete UCLA project manager certificate | Complete! |
Publish more content to this blog | Average one post every month for the year – no post size or topic restriction | In Danger – This is my fourth post, I would need to post 8 more articles in the next 51 days |
Publish at least one interview with a current producer | Complete! Check my interview with Bernard Yee | |
Publish more book reviews | Needs Work – I have read a fair number of books in the last months and I just need to find the time to write the reviews | |
Write at least one article about F2P monetization | Needs work – However, I did write one article on behavioral economics in my LinkedIn profile | |
Improve my development skills | Complete demo of a personal project and link to the blog | Deprioritized |
Participate in a game jam at any point of the year | Deprioritized |
I wrote back in January, when I published these goals, that completing them was not the point, but to make substantial progress towards my high-level goals. Thus, I consider this year to be a success already – my unwritten objective was to join the industry as a producer or product manager, and I have accomplished it.
What I want to focus on what’s little is left of the year is: publish two book reviews and at least two articles on game product management.
I have deprioritized improving my development skills; I love programming and really enjoyed participating in the global game jam. However, a good producer/product manager knows that time is limited, and sometimes we need to deprioritize things we like.
I hope I can match my ambition for what is left of the year and keep providing you useful and engaging content
Best,
Leonard
