Resources for video game production

What is coming in 2018

Jan 1, 2018

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share with you my closing analysis of 2017 and what you should expect from me and this blog on 2018.

My 2017 gaming resolutions

I promised I would do the following video game related in 2017:

  1. Learn enough C# and Unity to
    • Complete several Unity projects (AKA small games)
    • Work on an indie project
  2. Learn about video game production
    • Read at least two books on game production
    • Start a blog on the topic
    • Write at least one article
      • Have an experienced producer proofread it
  3. Get Agile certified

I added specific objectives to resolution 1 and 2 to make sure I could track success – It is always dangerous to define a goal as learn “X”, as learning it’s a never-ending process.

I can happily say mission accomplished for 1 and 2.

On learning C# and Unity: I am currently working with an international team for an indie game. My involvement is as a hobbyist as of now, but it is a great way to get some first-hand experience.

On learning about video game production: I was fortunate to have Nick Laing, senior producer at Turn 10 Microsoft (the team behind Forza Motor Sports) review my first article “What is a game producer”. The article was the result of a lot of time invested reading, watching and analyzing the industry. I learned tons in the process, and I already leveraged some of that newfound knowledge in my second article “Production Cycle”.

Sadly, I could not get an Agile certification during the year. However, I did decide what certification to pursue: Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO) from SCRUM.ORG. I will probably write a post about how I came to that conclusion in the following weeks. I fully intend to get certified in the first quarter of 2018, and thus I am carrying this one to my 2018 resolutions.

My 2018 gaming resolutions

I want to accomplish the following in 2018:

  1. Get Agile certified
    • Professional Scrum Product Owner I
    • Professional Scrum Product Owner II
  2. Stablish this blog as a trusted source of knowledge in the industry
    • Reach at least 1000 visitors to the blog site per month
    • Average one post every two weeks for the year – no post size or topic restriction
    • Conduct and publish interviews with current producers at all stages of their careers – these count as a post
  3. Continue polishing my development skills
    • Polish and re-skin some of my 2017 projects and link them to the blog
    • Complete demo of indie project

I selected these objectives with the intention to challenge myself but still have an excellent chance to achieve them. In true producer fashion, picking a goal is only part of the work, I also have to identify the most significant risk: time. I am working on a massive project that is about to go into full speed in my full-time job at the bank, and I will also become a dad in March. I expect that I will be able to learn to juggle all of this in due time, but if not, I will have to space out my contributions to the blog.

I am genuinely excited for 2018; there will be lots of work, but also lots of fun.

Best regards,
Leonard Perez
